Video Overview & Demo
The Kawai ES110 Portable Digital Piano
The Kawai ES110 is the latest addition to Kawai’s lineup of high-performance digital pianos. Using Kawai’s exclusive “Harmonic Imaging Technology” with an individual 88-key piano sampling, the Kawai ES110 outperforms every other piano in its class. The Kawai ES110 is also the first Kawai digital piano ever to feature a lightweight, high strength outer casing which gives maximum durability while keeping the weight to under 35 lbs and is also the only model from Kawai to ever sell for under $1000. This is a real breakthrough in digital technology and will allow for a whole new generation of young players to have access to an authentic touch and feel at an exceptional price point. Some of the other unique features on this model include a full weighted 88 key action, built-in speakers, 2 headphone jacks, and a music desk. This piano is also available with an optional designer stand and a 3-pedal system with a real working sostenuto pedal.
The Kawai Piano Company has been building pianos in Japan since 1927. Along with Yamaha, it is considered the largest piano manufacture in the world. Kawai builds over 100,000 pianos per year and has a state of the art production facility in Hamamatsu, Japan. In the 1980s Kawai decided that digital pianos were the future and they were going to invest the millions of dollars into the best R&D department the piano world would ever know. They dreamed of building a digital piano that actually performed like a real acoustic piano. Twenty years later, that dream has now become a reality.
Since the release of the Kawai ES110 in Canada earlier this year, it has quickly become one of the top-rated digital pianos on the market and is one of the #1 search terms for digital pianos under $1000 online. For most players, the ES110 is a perfect blend between a high-quality touch and feel, durability, excellent warranty coverage, and price.
Tone Engines & Sound:
The ES110 uses the Harmonic Imaging engine, which is an additive synthesis on top of an existing sample of a Kawai EX Concert Grand. Please note this is different than the SK-EX sample set that the new CN / CA pianos have. The ES110 can be connected via wireless Bluetooth to a tablet with Kawai’s Virtual Technician, which gives you microscopic control of all of the parameters. It also gives the player 192-note polyphony, which is PLENTY for great textured playing at any level of complexity.
The external audio jacks are a fantastic feature, meaning you can plug into an amp without defeating the local speaker system with the headphone jack.
The speakers have been redone on the ES110 vs the ES100, and the bass response has improved, as well as the projection.
Overall, the piano and e-piano sounds are rich, dynamic, and well-matched to the onboard speakers. With headphones or an amp, the instrument is truly a professional audio source.
The ES110 uses the first generation of Responsive Hammer Compact Action (RHC), which is a single sensor without escapement, but a tighter, firmer action than Kawai has previously put in their portable machines with plastic actions.
There’s a slight texture to the keys which is helpful, and the repetition speed and weight of the key is great as well.
The ES110 has all of the standard features one expects from a modern professional machine, including transpose, dual sound mode, metronome, and split mode. As well, it comes with full size and weight damper pedal with half-pedaling, which is great for piano players. The Kawai ES110 also features the built-in lesson function which features lesson songs from Alfred Publishing’s most popular first-year children’s method book.
If you’re a student, hobbyist player, or working professional, if you’re looking for a portable piano with built-in speakers, the ES110 is a MUST-SEE before deciding on something. They are famously indestructible, easy to operate, flexible with Bluetooth MIDI, lightweight, and offer a wide array of high-quality studio-grade sounds.
