One of the most fecund of all European piano manufacturers of today, Schimmel’s history starts all the way back in 1885 in Germany. While they also now produce pianos in both Poland and China, their premium Classic and Konzert series instruments are still built in Braunschweig Germany to this day.
The Konzert instruments are Schimmel’s newest offering and reflect the latest in cutting-edge design innovations. The Classic series on the other hand are built with Schimmel’s famous scale designs of the past, and fill the very specific niche of a more traditional German upright.
The Schimmel Classic 46” C116 is the smallest upright in the series, but this piano does not perform like a small instrument and is actually the top-selling instrument in the series. With a powerful voice, agile action, and elegant design, the C116 is one of the top 46” uprights in the class.
Renner builds and supplies the Classic series actions, but the designs themselves are by Schimmel. This means that while the C116 will feel similar to other German uprights with a Renner action, the touch is different.
Overall, this action is highly responsive and very fast, and in fact it feels like you’re playing a taller instrument.
While the Konzert series has gone in the direction of a darker tonal profile, the C116 features a brighter tone more traditionally associated with Schimmel.
The sustain is excellent, and the clarity across the entire range of the instrument is highly impressive. The C116 really captures the ‘Classic’ Schimmel tone.
Schimmel uses high-quality beach-core hammers in the Classic series, and the double felted wool comes from highly coveted Merino sheep from Spain.
Tapered, AA Bavarian White Mountain spruce is what you’ll find in the C116. White spruce contributes to the C116’s brighter tonal profile, and the extra labour of tapering results in a soundboard that performs like the larger, untapered ones you’ll find in lesser pianos.
The C116 is available in three distinct cabinet styles, all of which have won design awards. Regardless of the aesthetic of your home, there’s a C116 cabinet style to match.
