Toronto born flautist Laura Chambers began her flute studies at the age of five. She has since had the privilege of working with such artists as members of Nexus and composer Steve Reich. Ms. Chambers holds an Honours Bachelor of Performance from the University of Toronto and a Masters Degree from the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California where she studied under Professor James Walker. Previous teachers include Patrick Gallois, Susan Hoeppner, Camille Churchfield and TaraHelen O’Connor.
As a teacher, Ms. Chambers has had over a decade of private teaching experience with students ranging in age from 5 years to 85 years + and from beginner to advanced
abilities. She is an experience theory teacher, preparing many students to successfully complete Keyfest and RCM examinations (Rudiments, Harmony) as well as entrance auditions for many Universities. Ms. Chambers takes an individual approach to each student and draws from her experience with a number of different teaching methodologies for flute, including The Merriam School of Music Keyfest Curriculum,
Suzuki Flute and The Royal Conservatory of Music Curriculum. Ms. Chambers is inspired by working with her passionate and talented students, many of whom have won first place at festivals at the local and provincial level, are members of both the Mississauga Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Halton Mississauga Youth Orchestra, and have been accepted as participants to a number of competitive summer programs (including the summer programs at the Curtis Institute of Music and Julliard School)
Ms. Chambers has been a guest clinician at music camps and schools in both Canada and the United States. Laura is on the faculty of the Merriam School of Music, and also leads an active private studio of students in Toronto and is the flute specialist at Havergal College and St. Clements School. Recently, Laura completed a flute pedagogy course through the Great Lakes Flute Institute that specializes in starting young students (3yrsand up) on the flute. As a young starter herself Laura is very committed to setting up students for musical success from a very early age.
Laura has appeared as a concerto soloist, orchestral player and chamber ensemble musician across North America. As a player of modern, baroque and world flutes Laura has been a featured soloist with the Mississauga Symphony, and the Kitchener Waterloo Chamber Orchestra, and a guest artist with the Toronto Symphony and at the Glen Gould Studio, and Ottawa Chamber Music Festival. She has recorded for the Naxos label and award winning motion picture soundtracks, and is a member of the Quicksilver duo. An active member of the GTA freelance scene, Laura has had the pleasure of performing regularly with groups such as the Niagara Symphony, Orchestra Toronto and Orchestra London as well as with various chamber music groups.
