Sophia Smith is a woodwind player based in Toronto who plays alto saxophone, clarinet and flute. Her musical training began at Wilfrid Laurier University where she completed her Honours Bachelor of Music in Orchestral Performance on the saxophone, studying under Dave Wiffen. In 2014, she was the winner of the Wilfrid Laurier University Concerto Competition and had the honour of performing as a soloist with the WLU Symphony Orchestra. Sophia has also performed with the WLU Wind Orchestra and WLU Jazz Ensemble.
After completing her degree in Orchestral Performance, Sophia attended Humber College to study Jazz and Commercial Music. At Humber, Sophia studied under Mark Promane and performed with ensembles led by Bruce Cassidy, Hilario Duran, Luis Deniz and Andy Ballantyne. Sophia is currently a member of the Toronto All-Star Big Band, playing alto saxophone, clarinet and flute, at notable venues and festivals across Southwestern Ontario such as the Old Mill, Casa Loma and the Beaches International Jazz Festival. As a secondary instrument Sophia also teaches piano.
