Janelle Laarakker completed an Honours Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance at Wilfrid Laurier University, where she actively performed as a soloist and participated in choral ensembles and staged productions. While attending Laurier, she served as co-president of Laurier Student NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing), was a teacher’s assistant for WLU Concert Choir, and worked with a non-profit music organization offering voice lessons to underprivileged youth.
Janelle was the recipient of numerous awards for academic and musical achievement, including the Meta Voss Music Award and the Keith Knights Performance Award. Although she has a solid background in Classical education, interest in other styles led her to purse cross-training in musical theatre and contemporary genres. Janelle also completed advanced training through the Royal Conservatory of Music for both voice and piano prior to attending university.
As a teacher, she enthusiastically encourages the enjoyment and exploration of various styles while maintaining the pursuit of individual excellence. A private music teacher since 2008, she maintains an ongoing interest in music pedagogy and continues to improve her skill set through professional development. Janelle is a member of the National Association of Music Teachers and the Ontario Registered Music Teacher’s Association.
