Karen Chorney has been teaching private voice, piano and theory across southern Ontario for over ten years. After graduating from Queen’s University’s music and drama programs, she enjoyed a brief career as a professional musical theatre performer before turning her attention to her true passion, teaching, full-time. Karen returned to Queen’s to complete her Bachelor of Education through the Artist in Community Education stream, and was hired as a permanent secondary music, drama and special education teacher with the Peel District School Board upon graduating in 2011.
Her high school teaching includes a focus on contemporary rock-band instrumental methods, as well as group and solo singing. Her private studio students have received numerous scholarships and awards from festivals across the GTA (including Provincials), as well as First Class Honours with Distinction in their RCM voice exams. Karen has prepared several students for successful post-secondary theatre program auditions, and many of these students are now enjoying their own careers as working theatre artists.
In addition to an active teaching life, Karen continues to perform both professionally and with amateur companies throughout Ontario. At Christmastime, she can be found singing soprano with the Baker Street Victorian Carollers.
She has recently been seen on stage as Mary Poppins at the Rose Theatre, Princess Fiona in Shrek at Meadowvale Theatre (for which she won an Act-Co award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical), and Olive Ostrovsky in the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at Drury Lane Theatre
Karen’s diverse background in teaching and performing allows her to tailor lessons specifically to meet the needs and interests of each student. She has a particular interest in helping students capture an audience through song, and in supporting their healthy vocal development so they can sing a variety of genres with ease.
