Ryan Milliken is a Vancouver born and Toronto based musician, composer and teacher. Ryan was born into a musical family and began informal music training at a young age.

At only five years of age he started taking guitar lessons weekly studying from the Method One book. By age twelve he started to study jazz guitar at Calgary’s Mount Royal University. Soon he was playing around Calgary opening for Canadian poet concept and Arcade Fire. By high school Ryan was playing more piano and percussion and was diversifying his musical skill set.

His wide variety of ability is matched only by his eclectic interests. These new skills lead to work as a percussionist in local orchestras playing cymbals, gongs and triangle. The opportunities to compose for two plays soon fallowed and he composed scores for productions of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” as well as “I Claudia”. Shortly after this he opened for Blood Sweat and Tears and The Mocking Shadows and a summer solstice festival. Ryan also performed with Cuban legend Bobby Carcasses and Eric Marienthal of Gordon Goodwins Big Phat Band and Chick Corea’s Elektric Band who says “Great Playing” referring to their performance at Quincy’s Jazz club.

Ryan moved to Toronto to pursue his studies at Humber College. Here he studies drums, piano, percussion, theory and harmony. He has played in a number of ensembles there ranging from free jazz, world hand drumming, trombone big band to a Dave Holland Quintet tribute. In Toronto he continues to work as a teacher and composer.

He also spent some time playing with the Holton Regional Honour Band. He has also worked with Andre Brewster (Kardinal Offishall). Recently he did a fund raiser for local trombone players featuring Al Kay and Russ Little. He has also studied with Cuban percussionist. In the future Ryan will continuing his life long study of music and plans to continue to teach, record and perform across Canada. His upcoming performances feature the CD release party of a recently recorded album entitled “the essence identity”.

In a few weeks he will be going into the studio to cut his first record on the piano. Later this year in March Ryan will be part of a performance/workshop with legendary composer, band leader and bassist Dave Holland.
