How We Started

Merriam Music Inc. is family-owned and operated, headquartered just outside Toronto Canada in Oakville. Alan Merriam founded the school and store in 1988, and continues today as President and CEO. Merriam Music has two areas of focus: piano sales and music education.

Merriam’s piano division, known as Merriam Pianos, is, by volume, the largest in Canada, and amongst the Top 20 globally. There are currently three locations in the GTA – Oakville, Vaughan, and the newly renovated/purchased Robert Lowrey Showroom east of Midtown Toronto. Merriam’s education division, which includes Merriam High School, The Merriam School of Music, and the Merriam Music Online Academy, hosts 3000+ weekly students. It’s primary teaching facility, the Oakville campus, is the largest private music school facility in Canada by square footage and student population.

What's Different

Merriam Music applies technology in all aspects of our business at levels – and in ways – that out-pace companies 3-5 times our size. This stems directly from Mr. Merriam’s own personal interest in constantly seeking out innovative ways to connect staff and customers with exciting new tools and technologies. This has led to a willingness to invest in software and equipment that has connected virtually all aspects of the business together, from the student and customer experience, to advertising and content, to the ‘backend’ of business and financial operations.

Examples of this are numerous; Merriam was the largest digital piano dealer of Roland pianos in the late 1980’s, introducing customers to MIDI technology for the first time, long before most homes even had personal computers. They were amongst the first in the education and instrument retail worlds to use digital CRM and digital financial ‘back-end’ technology from ACCPAC. And by the early 2000’s was investing close to 10% of its profits annually into digital marketing, SEO, and video production.

Since 2015, Merriam has invested in a fully customized financial backend system built on the Salesforce platform, a customized online lesson portal, and interface, and multiple websites and social/Youtube channels that lead our industry in terms of traffic and visibility. In fact, our primary domain, MerriamMusic.com is now ranked as one of the most authoritative music education and retail sites in the world.

The director of operations can teach you about subdivision, key signatures, and tonality. Our IT director used to manage one of Toronto’s most famous recording studios. Our Marketing and Sales director is also a professional performer and producer. Our CFO is in a professional bell choir. Our front-line staff includes a composer, an EDM producer, a classical pianist, a jazz saxophonist, and a former touring drummer.
