Alana Merriam grew up in a household completely surrounded by music, with parents who valued and cherished it above most other things. She started piano and voice at the age of 5, and went through the entire Keyfest curriculum. At the age of 13 she began taking flute lessons which she placed first and second at two Provincial competitions. She also started taking soprano saxophone lessons around the same time.
At the age of 15 she formed a band with 3 other girls where she was lead vocal/rhythm guitar/piano. They covered many tunes but mostly wrote their own music, which was a great way to expand her songwriting skills and collaborate with others. The band was formed through the Band Chops program and was something she really enjoyed. Alana graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and minor in Business, where she also worked in the Child and Memory Lab as a volunteer, and is excited to apply this knowledge to her students and teaching.
