Rumiko Sokolowski started working at Merriam Music in 2002. She teaches piano for all students, including the Enriched program. Starting piano lessons at the age of 4, she studied with Audrey Vorstenbosch, Mariusz DeBick and Marion Miller, before going to Wilfrid Laurier University, where she studied with Leslie De’Ath and Boyd MacDonald. She also participated in summer workshops with James Parker and Marietta Orlov and was lucky enough to play for Angela Hewitt in a masterclass. At Laurier, she received her Honours Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance. She has a classical background but can also teach pop and basic jazz. She loves preparing students for Keyfest exams and can also prepare a student for RCM exams.
Initially learning how to play piano with the Suzuki method, Rumiko developed strong ear-training skills, but struggled with reading. Because of her own experience, in her teaching, she stresses the importance of note-reading and ensure her students understand the music they are playing. She helps them develop effective practicing techniques using step-by-step instructions and creates exercises to fix problem areas. Most importantly, she likes to strike a balance between having fun while continually progressing and achieving results. She believes it’s important to develop a strong connection with the student in order to help them achieve their full potential, and finds this is a key to her success!
Throughout the years, Rumiko has held different roles within Merriam Music and in 2013, became the Director of Human Resources. She is responsible for recruiting, hiring and training teachers and staff, but continues to teach a couple students every year.
