A few weeks ago we had a studio first. A client had come to us with a rather unusual request. He was not a musician, not an engineer, not a producer, just a lover of music who was soon to be married, with a very romantic idea to put a personal touch on a special day.

The wedding was only a few weeks away, and his wife’s favourite song was an old jazz standard, “Come Fly With Me”. After countless hours of scouring the internet for the perfect version of the song to use as their first dance at their wedding reception, they had come to the conclusion that no previously recorded version would do. The client had explained his situation to me and asked if I would be able to find a session pianist and vocalist to record the version of “Come Fly With Me” that the couple heard in their head. Their perfect version of the song.

Once we had the musicians on board, the client, the musicians, and myself met up in the studio. A few versions of the song were played to brief the players on the idea, and feel that the client was looking for, a few ideas bounced around, then we started tracking. The musicians played off each other perfectly, instantly giving the song the intimate, real feel and sound that was needed for the first dance. Right away I saw the groom-to-be’s face light up with excitement. After a few takes, we had the record.

The groom explained that this was exactly the version of “Come Fly With Me”, that was in both his, and his fiance’s head. They had dreamed of dancing to exactly this song on their wedding night.

The couple were thrilled to have their own personal version of a classic. The song will be a gift that they have, cherish, and can listen to for years to come. Truly a great idea to put a very personal touch on a very personal day.
