Roland’s No Compromises + Top Performance Value Portable Piano
For someone looking to get a portable digital piano and wants the best the market has to offer, Roland’s FP-90 will certainly be on your radar. Equipped with Roland’s top tone engine, their sought-after hybrid wood/plastic key action, and an excellent 4 speaker, high fidelity audio interface, the FP-90 is a total treat to play. The Roland FP-90 Digital Piano will satisfy the most discerning players looking for a portable solution and outfitted this instrument with an excellent multichannel speaker system.
The FP-90 is the fourth and most advanced model in Roland’s FP-series, and has become a market leader in its category for many reasons, some of which include:
– Action. The FP90 is the only model in Roland’s FP series to receive their PHA-50 action, which is a hybrid action made of wood/plastic, offering players a longer key stick, and better-distributed pivot point (for more control in lower dynamic ranges); pure butter to play
– Tone. The FP-90 receives Roland’s fully modeled, top-quality tone engine, which gives the player a wider and more accurate range of expression and nuance
– Speakers. This piano has 4 high fidelity/premium onboard speakers, installed in the instrument body, giving it the remarkably full spectrum of sound and does justice to the powerful tone engine
– Case. Having received awards for its case design, the FP-90 frame not only looks great, but the on-board button/slider panels + LCD screen make it one of the most intuitive to use digital pianos on the market
“With the FP-90 being Roland’s flagship portable piano, it’s literally packed with the best Roland has to offer, which for anyone familiar with their pianos, is quite a lot. The action is very well balanced and super responsive and all of the sounds (not just the piano ones) are excellent! It’s truly an instrument that you’ll be excited to play, not jut one that ‘gets the job done’”

Ever since Roland introduced the world’s first touch-sensitive electronic piano, the EP-30, in 1972, it has been a leader in the design and manufacture of the digital piano. Roland instruments of all kinds are known by professional musicians, educators, and home hobbyists all around the world for their sound quality and durability. The built-in equalizer allows you to modify the sound color by boosting or reducing certain frequency ranges (Low, Mid, High).
Roland’s current line up of digital pianos incorporate their expressive SuperNATURAL™ Piano Sound with Progressive Hammer key actions to faithfully recreate the grand piano experience while providing all the advantages of the digital world.
The SuperNATURAL™ Piano sound combines the realism of multi-sampled piano sound with the extended dynamic range and realism of modeling technology gleaned from their flagship and revolutionary V-Grand piano. With built-in Bluetooth wireless support, the FP-90 goes one step further by letting you stream music through the piano’s powerful internal speakers for a far more immersive experience and is also packed with electric pianos, strings, organs, synths/synth sounds, and more, providing you with a plethora of diverse sounds. The sound system of the piano consists of 4 speakers: two 8 x 12 cm speakers (50W) are responsible for high- and mid-range frequencies.
Their Progressive Hammer key actions are precisely weighted from low bass to high treble to recreate the control of a grand piano action, with ivory–feel key surface, and escapement with a keyboard of an excellent complement to its acoustic and electric piano sounds. There is a dedicated mic volume slider that allows you to change the volume of the mic on the fly. And with 288 notes of polyphony, you can freely use the damper pedal to realize authentic acoustic performances.
With built-in Bluetooth wireless support, the FP-90 goes one step further by letting you stream music through the piano’s powerful internal speakers for a far more immersive experience. The Bluetooth connectivity handles MIDI support and audio, so you can expand the instrument’s capabilities to include app-based features such as rhythm patterns and auto-accompaniment that allows for connecting wirelessly with Roland’s Piano Partner 2, and other music apps on a smartphone or tablet.
SuperNATURAL Piano modeling technology is a unique modeling process that spans the entire sound creation process of an acoustic piano. Its piano sound engine, which reproduces a concert piano in meticulous detail. Roland’s flagship SuperNATURAL Piano Modeling technology provides rich sound, detailed piano sound through a built-in four-speaker system.
If you sing as well, the mic input and dedicated vocal effects like compression, doubling and reverb let you get great vocal sounds without any extra gear. The FP-90 is still a popular choice for stage/studio performances and offers a bunch of useful features for that like PA systems, mixers, audio interfaces to get a better/more powerful sound and complex sound during live performances. When used at home, it can even be paired with a matching KSC-72 stand and KPD-90 pedal for a sophisticated contemporary upright look. You can even record whole performances to a USB memory stick in WAV or MP3 format for sharing with others!
Roland has been one of the lead innovators in electronic and digital pianos from the 1980’s onward. Many of the approaches to manufacturing and synthesis technology that Roland developed in their early years have become industry-wide practices. They were one of the first companies to bring the MIDI recording to people’s homes, and also one of the first to develop a truly life-like piano tone. Roland’s embrace of the entire range of instruments led to the development of the V-Series of instruments, encompassing everything from Accordions to Drums, to Pianos.
